Astrology for Kids: A Fun Way to Build Confidence, Empathy, and Imagination
Astrology is an amazing self-discovery tool that not only supports kids in developing emotional intelligence and empathy for others but also teaches them to harness their strengths and build healthy self-confidence. Through the lens of Astrology, children learn to self-reflect and recognize patterns and personality traits in themselves and in the people around them.
Understanding different temperaments teaches them that everyone has different ways of expressing and communicating feelings. Becoming familiar with the general characteristics of the Zodiac signs (Taurus typically likes nature and good food, Aries can be impatient, Virgo acts more humbly, Sagittarius is adventurous, etc.) helps children understand that hobbies, interests, tastes, preferences, and inclinations can vary greatly among peers. Thus, it becomes much easier to resolve conflicts.
Besides the aforementioned mental, psychological, and social benefits, Astrology also connects kids with nature and natural cycles. Through countless activities and games, they can learn about the seasons and planetary cycles and how these cycles impact organisms here on Earth. This includes us humans and the plant and animal kingdoms.
Astrology has a magical side too, and reading mythology fables can be a great way to foster children’s imagination and curiosity about history and life philosophy, thereby building a solid foundation of ethics, justice, and values for their future lives. My friend and co-author Ashley Lauren and I have recently published Astro Adventures – Astrology Fables for Children. More on this below.
Here are a few fun activities and games for kids that you can implement at home or in class:
Moon Journal (Ages 5-9)
- Have kids draw the moon every night for a month and note how they feel.
- Teach them that the full moon is bright and energetic and brings things to light, while the new moon is a quiet time when we set a new intention or goal. Also let them know the Moon’s impact on the ocean’s tides and plant life.
Element Treasure Hunt (Ages 3-7)
- Assign each child an element (fire, earth, air, water) based on their zodiac sign.
- Have them find items in nature that match (e.g., leaves for earth, water in a puddle, wind chimes or a feather for air, something red for fire). Or have them draw items out.
Planet Dance (Ages 4-8)
- Each child represents a planet and moves in their “orbit” around the Sun. This may need some space, but you can limit it to the 7 visible planets.
- Talk about each planet’s personality (eg. Sun stays still, Moon circles around Earth, Venus carries a heart or smiles beautifully, Mercury is quick, Mars marches like a soldier, Jupiter pretends to be big, Saturn moves slowly like an old man, etc.). Or describe the planets’ attributes and let the kids decide how to act these out!
Star Story Time (Ages 3-7)
- Read mythological stories for each zodiac sign.
- Let kids imagine themselves as celestial heroes (Ares, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hermes, Prometheus, etc.). Have them either draw or act out the character.
- Here I make a shameless promotion for Astro Adventures – Astrology Fables for Children by Ashley Lauren and myself which is available at Amazon. (see more below)
Zodiac Theater (Ages 6-12)
- Have kids collaborate on writing a story that includes various Zodiac signs (Aries Athlete, Taurus Gardener, Gemini Journalist, Cancer Cook, etc.), or use the planets to create stories (Saturn is depressed and Mercury cheers him up with jokes, Moon with caring support or comfort food, Sun with warm rays, etc.)
- Have them act out role plays.
